Ward, Mrs. Not identified. The contributor describes the Emperor Louis Napoleon as she chanced to see him in 1858 in the château garden at Plombières. She has some interest in and some knowledge of international politics; she refers to the political implication of certain of the Emperor's motives.
The Mrs. Ward most likely to be the H.W. contributor is Mrs. Harriet Ward (Allibone). Mrs. Harriet Ward was wife of an English officer; lived at various times on the Continent and had much interest in France and the French. Contributed to Bentley's Misc. and Sharpe's. Author of Helen Charteris, 1848, and other novels; Five Years in Kaffirland, 1848; and a few other books.
Another Mrs. Ward – Emma Georgina Elizabeth Ward – lived for many years in France. Author of Outside Paris during the Two Sieges. By an Englishwoman, 1871, originally intended for private circulation. No record, however, of her writing other books or contributing to periodicals.
