Not identified. According to his article, the contributor was an Englishman "for some time domesticated in the village of Betela on the Lebanon"; resided, with his wife, "in that portion of the village belonging to the younger branch of sheiks"; in his article tells of the customs and beliefs of the Druses inhabiting the village. Payment recorded as "Advanced by W.H.W".

The contributor may perhaps be the "English gentleman, long resident in Lebanon ... in whose word the most implicit reliance can be placed", mentioned by M. R. L. Meason in "The Druses of Lebanon", Once a Week, July 28 1860. The Englishman had related to Meason an instance of a sheik's display of magical power.

Samuel Allibone, A Critical Dictionary of English Literature (1858-1871) lists E. J. Jones as author of Assyria and Palestine Recollections, 1857; the English Catalogue of Books, 1835-1863, gives the author of that book as E. J. Jonas. The book is not listed in the British Museum General Catalogue of Printed Books.

Author: Anne Lohrli; University of Toronto Press, 1971.
